원주시 립중앙도서관은 원주시의 진산인 치악산을 모티브로 구조물을 계획하여 원주시의 새로운 시립도서관으로서의 상징성을 부여하였다. 치악산을 정면으로 바라보는 입지 조건을 활용하여, 이를 도서관 내부로 끌어들여 치악산을 안고 있는 자연 친화적인 디자인으로 계획하였다. 정형화되지 않은 자연 숲의 이미지를 형상화한 입면 디자인으로 도서관 이용자들이 마치 숲 속에 들어온 듯한 느낌올 받게 된다. 사람과 자연의 흐름이 하나로 모여 서로 관계를 맺으며，도시민의 일상생활과 복합 문화의 중심공간으로 자리매김한다.
The Wonju City Central Library is designed with a motif of Chiaksan Mountain, which is the guardian mountain of Wonju City, to emphasize its status as the new city library of Wonju. Using the geographical conditions of facing Chiaksan Mountain directly, the building embraces Chiaksan Mountain and offers a nature-friendly atmosphere. The elevation design, representing a unique image of a forest, offers visitors the impression that they have entered a forest. The new library serves a center of everyday life and a new cultural hub, while it also helps people and nature form a healthy relationship.
